Visual sequences have long been a means for telling stories and conveying ideas. In this class we will survey the graphic traditions of story telling exemplified by the Bayeux tapestry, Roman friezes, Pompeian frescos, historic maps, and comics. We will discuss techniques used film and theatre that are useful in inspiring drawing: the pan, the close-up, the context, the sets, and the characters. Students will work with various pictorial formats as a springboard to create their own personal narratives or abstract sequences.

Drawing continues to be a direct means of expression, similar to journals, a place to record and experiment with initial ideas. This class focused on experimenting with mixed media and non-traditional materials in drawing. A series of in-class assignments will guide students through various techniques and the uses of materials, including mark-making, layering, juxtaposing, rubbings, collage, stenciling, and image transfers. Students will add new drawing materials and methods to their personal artistic practice.

This course will introduce emerging artists to the basic discourses of art theory from the concept of the avant-garde to postmodernism to post-postmodernism in contemporary art. Theory will be discussed in conjunction with specific works of art from 1945 to the present that represent the major tendencies. The intention here is to help artists find the relationship of their work to the prevailing art world currents and to learn to talk about their work using the relevant art discourse.
