East Bay Open Studios Artist: Linda Yao

Born in New Zealand, Linda Yao is a long-time Bay Area resident, painter and printmaker inspired by California’s cultural and geographical diversity.
“Tenders Of The Night” is one of her on-going series based on the Port of Oakland. It began as an insomnia-sublimation exercise that occurred during the darkest pre-dawn hours, during that singular torpor between the winding-down of the late-night shift heading home and the revving up of the morning one heading out. Starting as fitful pencil and pen doodles, the series morphed into small vantage-point paintings summarizing the theater outside the living room-window proscenium – contemplatives on the dramatic plays of light and dark between the inhabitants of a harbor that never sleeps.
